Activities
For the courageous at heart, Bhutan has a myriad of adventure and sport activities on offer, from trekking, cycling, river-rafting to rock climbing. The majestic scenery, coupled with the welcoming people and deep-seated heritage of the country, makes for a unique and well sort after travel destination.
Discover the countryside
The mountainous countryside lends itself well to both on-road and off-road cycling. There are a variety of biking routes available ranging from light and easy-going journeys on paved roads to more challenging off-road dirt trails, 3,400m above sea level, which wind through more challenging terrain. Cycling offers a certain intimacy with the environment that is seldom experienced when travelling by car or bus. In recent years this past time sport has increased in popularity both amongst visitors and Bhutanese alike.
Discover the rivers
Fed by the glacial-melt of the Eastern Himalayas, six major rivers runs through the Kingdom, ideal for rafting and kayaking, whether you’re looking for a gentle stream or more commanding rapids. Levels of kayaking and rafting are plentiful, ranging from novice to expert. The untouched natural setting and diversity of rivers choices make for an invigorating opportunity to explore Bhutan’s wilderness. Popular locations are to be found at Paro Chhu, Upper Pho Chhu, Mo Chhu- Tashitang Devil’s Gorge section and Mangde Chhu.
A good time of the year for rafting and kayaking is from March to April and November to December.
Discover the mountains
Trekking offers perhaps the closest experience to the true pace and beauty of Bhutan. Unique to hiking elsewhere in the Himalayas, the crystal clear air and views that challenge comprehension, make exploring the mountainous trails of Bhutan an experiencing worth considering. Some trails are short and suitable for the novice while others can be lengthy and challenging.
Hiking facilities throughout Bhutan are regularly being improved. Most treks use tented campsite accommodation and on many times you will be the only trekkers in sight.
